AI Overviews
AI Overviews is the summary Google places above the ordinary results on some searches, written by Google's model and carrying links to the pages it drew from. Google states that there is no special markup and no structured data requirement to appear in one, and that the same guidance which applies to ranking in Search applies here. Pages become eligible by being indexed and useful, not by adding a tag.
An AI Overview is generated per search rather than stored, so two people running the same search may not see the same summary, and one may see no summary at all. The block appears more often on questions that have an explanatory answer and less often on searches with clear commercial intent.
The links inside an Overview are the part that matters for a business. Being cited there puts a site above the ordinary results, and being absent while a competitor is cited pushes an agent further down a page they may already rank on.
Because eligibility follows ordinary indexing, the work that earns a citation is the familiar work: pages that can be crawled, that answer a real question directly, and that state facts a summary can safely repeat.
Why it matters
An AI Overview occupies the space directly above the results, so a page ranking third can be pushed well below the fold on the same search it used to win.
