    LLM Citation

An LLM citation is a link or named reference an AI assistant includes to show where part of its answer came from. Being cited is the AI-search equivalent of ranking: it puts a business in front of someone at the moment they asked, and it is the only part of an AI answer a reader can click. Citations are chosen from pages the assistant retrieved while composing that specific answer.

Assistants cite the source of a passage they used, which means the unit that earns a citation is a paragraph rather than a whole page. A long, well-regarded page that never states a fact plainly can go uncited while a short page that answers one question directly gets picked.

Citations also depend on retrieval, which happens before generation. If the page cannot be fetched by the assistant's crawler, nothing else about it matters. This is the most common failure on real estate sites, where the substantive content often sits inside a JavaScript widget that a text-only crawler never sees.

Tracking citations means asking the assistants directly and recording what comes back, since no assistant reports the citations it issued to the sites it cited.

    Why it matters

A citation is the only clickable part of an AI answer, so it is the single path from an AI conversation back to an agent's own website.
