    Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

    Also called: GEO

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how often a brand is mentioned and cited by AI systems that generate written answers. It covers the same page-level work as Answer Engine Optimization, and adds everything off the site that shapes how a model describes a business: how consistently the business is described elsewhere, and how often independent sources say the same thing about it.

The two terms overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. Where people draw a line, it is usually this one: AEO describes work on the page, and GEO describes the wider job of becoming the answer, including sources the business does not own.

The off-site half matters because generative systems weigh agreement. When a brokerage profile, a board directory, a local news mention, and the agent's own site all describe the same person the same way, a model treats that description as settled fact. When they disagree, for example different phone numbers or a different service area on each, the model has no settled fact to repeat and tends to name someone else.

This is slower work than editing a page, and it cannot be bought outright. It is the accumulation of being described accurately in enough independent places that the description stops being contestable.

    Why it matters

Two agents can have equally good websites, and the one described consistently across the rest of the web is the one an AI assistant will name.
