Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Also called: AEO
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring a web page so that a tool which answers questions directly, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, or Perplexity, can quote it. It differs from ordinary search optimization in what counts as success: the goal is being named inside an answer, not holding a position in a list of blue links. The work is mostly writing self-contained passages that state a fact and stand on their own.
An answer engine builds a reply by retrieving pages, pulling the specific sentences that address the question, and repeating them with a citation. That retrieval step is passage-level, so a page can be cited for one paragraph while the rest of it is ignored. This is why AEO work concentrates on individual passages rather than on the page as a whole.
In practice, three things decide whether a passage gets used. It has to be reachable, which means the text is in the HTML rather than drawn in by JavaScript after the page loads. It has to be self-contained, which means the sentence still makes sense when lifted away from the heading above it. And it has to state something specific enough to be worth quoting, because a sentence that could describe any agent in the country gives the engine no reason to pick it.
For a real estate agent, the questions worth answering this way are the ones a buyer or seller actually types: what a listing agreement commits them to, how long a sale usually takes in a given area, what a strata levy is. Each of those deserves a passage that answers it in one paragraph.
Why it matters
An agent who never writes a directly quotable answer can rank well on Google and still be invisible in the tools an increasing share of buyers now ask first.
